How to draw a cat looking out a window

Two birds have landed on the branch outside, and Smudge can’t take her eyes off them. In 50 steps you’ll draw a cat sitting on a window sill and looking out of the window, her striped tail flicking, using a pencil and paper: two ovals and a circle to start, then her face and fur, the plant pot, the window and the birds.

How do you draw a cat looking out a window?

To draw a cat looking out a window, start light: an oval for her head right of the middle near the top, a taller tilted oval for her chest, a circle down to its left for her haunch, two lines for her front legs and a long curve for her tail, out to the left and up. Draw her head and ears, her eyes with tall pupils, her nose and mouth, and her tabby marks. Add her chest, both front legs, her back, the back paw and the tail. Then the fur in short marks, in her ears and on her face, body, chest and legs, five whiskers on each side, and the stripes on her tail as rows of little flicks, with swish lines at its tip. Draw the plant pot, the sill, the window frame and bars behind her, a branch outside with two birds on it, and glare on the glass. Rub out the guides and go over Smudge, leaving the stripes, the fur and the window light. The light comes through the window on the right, so shade softly down her left side, round the haunch and along the tail, then her shadow on the sill. Last, fill in her pupils. It takes 50 steps with a pencil, paper and an eraser.

Start light: an oval for Smudge's head, right of the middle near the top. Below it a taller, tilted oval for her chest, and a circle down to its left for her haunch.

Draw these lightly: they’re only there to help, and you’ll rub them out in step 38.

Tips for a better cat looking out a window

  1. Two ovals and a circle

An oval for her head, a taller tilted one for her chest and a circle down to its left for her haunch. Two lines for the front legs and a curve for the tail, and she’s sitting.

  2. Fur in short marks

Her fur is lots of short marks: in the ears, round her face, down her chest and over her body. When you go over her outline, leave them light.

  3. Light from the window

The light comes through the window on the right, so the soft shading sits on her left: down her face and neck, along her back, round her haunch and under her tail.

  4. Pupils last

Fill in her pupils last of all, leaving the glints white. Now she’s watching the birds.

Questions

How do I draw a cat looking out of a window?

Put her head right of the middle near the top, with her right eye narrower than her left. Then draw the window round her: the frame and bars run up behind her to the top of the page, and the branch with the birds sits outside, level with her eyes.

What do I need?

A pencil, paper and an eraser. Draw the first steps lightly: the guide lines are rubbed out in step 38. The pot, the sill and the window are drawn before that, but they have no guides of their own, so they stay.

How do I draw a tabby cat’s striped tail?

Draw the outline of the tail first. Then each stripe is a row of short flicks side by side, from the inner edge across: three near the tip, then four more down to her haunch. Two swish lines each side of the tip make it flick.

Can kids draw it?

Yes. It’s made for beginners of any age. If reading the steps is hard, the draw-along talks you through each line while it draws.
