How to draw an axolotl and tadpoles

The tadpoles have hatched, and Mochi is racing them. In 47 steps you’ll draw an axolotl swimming, legs out and long tail fin behind her, using a pencil and paper: two ovals and a curve to start, then her face, her fern-like gills and her legs, and last the tadpoles and the plants below.

How do you draw an axolotl and tadpoles?

To draw an axolotl swimming, start light: an oval for Mochi’s head, another for her body and a curve rising through the middle of her tail, then a line for each of three legs. Draw her head in one line, her big eye with its iris, pupil and glint, the edge of her far eye peeking over her snout, two little nostrils with three freckles, and her big smile with the open mouth and tongue. Then the gills, like ferns: two on top of her head from the far side and three at the top of her neck, each a thin stalk with a frilly line round it. Draw her back and long tail, the fin that runs over it and back underneath, the near front and back legs, her belly and the far legs. Add soft folds at her neck and hip and fine lines across the fin. Then two tadpoles racing behind her, the water plants and pebbles below, and bubbles rising. Rub out the guides, go over Mochi and the tadpoles, and shade softly: under her jaw, along her lower side and her tail, and the tadpoles darker all over. She’s swimming, so there’s no shadow under her. Fill in her tall pupil last. It takes 47 steps with a pencil, paper and an eraser.

  1. Step 1 of 47Guide lines

    Big shapes first

The tadpoles have hatched, and Mochi is racing them. Start light: an oval for her head, another for her body that stops at the head, and a curve rising through the middle of her tail.

Draw these lightly: they’re only there to help, and you’ll rub them out in step 29.

  2. Step 2 of 47Guide lines

    Leg guides

A line down the middle of three legs: bent for the near front leg below her gills, straight and slanting for the far one on the left, and bent for the back leg.

Draw these lightly: they’re only there to help, and you’ll rub them out in step 29.

  3. Step 3 of 47

    Mochi's head

Now the real lines. From the top right of Mochi's head, over the top, round her nose and back under her jaw.

How to draw an axolotl and tadpoles, step 3: mochi's head
  4. Step 4 of 47

    Mochi's eye

Her eye, high on her head just right of the middle: an almond from its left corner, a round iris, a tall pupil, a glint at its top right, a line under, a brow above.

How to draw an axolotl and tadpoles, step 4: mochi's eye
  5. Step 5 of 47

    Her far eye

Her far eye just peeks over her snout, so only its edge shows: a curve down its side with a flick at the bottom, a thin curve inside it, and a short line above.

How to draw an axolotl and tadpoles, step 5: her far eye
  6. Step 6 of 47

    Her nose

Two little nostrils low on her snout: one at the very front, one just behind it. Then three small oval freckles above them.

  7. Step 7 of 47

    Mochi's smile

Her big smile, from the left corner along to a little curl at the right end. Then the open mouth: from under the smile, two-thirds along, round to the left corner, and her tongue.

  8. Step 8 of 47

    The first far gill

The gills are like ferns. On top of her head, left of her eye, a thin stalk up and back, then a frilly line up its left side, round the tip and down its right.

Tips for a better axolotl and tadpoles

  1. Two ovals and a curve

An oval for her head, another for her body that stops at the head, and one curve rising through the middle of her tail. Keep them light: they get rubbed out in step 29.

  2. Just the edge of the far eye

Her far eye only peeks over her snout: a curve down its side with a flick at the bottom, a thin curve inside it and a short line above.

  3. Lines that lean together

Fine lines across the fin above her tail and below it, from her body out to the edge, all leaning the same way.

  4. No shadow under her

Mochi is swimming, so there’s no shadow under her. Shade the tadpoles darker all over, and put a little shadow round the pebbles so the plants sit on the floor.

Questions

How do I draw an axolotl swimming?

Start with an oval for her head, another for her body and a curve rising through her tail. Then a line for each of three legs: bent for the near front leg, straight and slanting for the far one, and bent for the back leg. She’s swimming, so nothing touches the ground and there’s no shadow under her.

What do I need?

A pencil, paper and an eraser. Draw the first steps lightly: the guide lines are rubbed out in step 29.

How do I draw an axolotl’s gills?

They’re like ferns. Each one is a thin stalk out and back, then a frilly line up one side, round the tip and down the other. Two peek over the top of her head from the far side, and three grow from the top of her neck: a tall one, a middle one and a low one pointing straight back.

Can kids draw it?

Yes. It’s made for beginners of any age. If reading the steps is hard, the draw-along talks you through each line while it draws.
